What does polishing do for your car?

Car enthusiasts know that ultimate shine and reflection are best achieved through some form of polishing. The application of wax or a sealant alone does not provide the more permanent and dramatic improvement as a good machine polishing can. Polishing is a process where an extremely fine layer of clear coat is removed to flatten the surface to permanently get rid of those pesky fine swirls, scratches, and oxidation that especially appear in direct sunlight. A nicely polished vehicle will have show-car level shine, depth, and gloss.

What is the difference between a one-step and two-step polish?

ONE-STEP: A single-pass with a machine polisher to remove light scratches and defects while simultaneously creating gloss. Mostly used on newer or light-colored cars although any paint color will benefit from a one-step at some level.

TWO-STEP: The first step is a machine polish to remove deeper scratches and defects. The second step is the finishing pass to remove most fine defects creating depth and gloss. Darker paints usually require a two-step polish to achieve maximum results.

Not every paint finish is made the same. Several conditions determine the type of polish process that is needed, i.e. age of the car, the color of paint, the thickness of paint finish (soft paint vs. hard paint), level of scratches, and expectations of the owner.

What is the difference between soft paint and hard paint?

Paint hardness has a direct impact on a detailer’s ability to remove scratches. A thicker, harder protective clearcoat makes it more difficult to effectively remove scratches. The thinner the clearcoat is, the softer it is making it easier to remove scratches, but one must be careful when dealing with soft paint.

Auto makers like Audi, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes typically have hard paint. Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus (most Japanese manufacturers), and Porsche have soft paints. As for the American manufacturers…they’re all across the board.

***********************************************

Polishing creates extremely smooth and even surfaces which allows light to bounce off in one direction. The result is dramatically improved optical clarity with deep, accurate reflectivity.  So if you want to dramatically enhance the paint on your car, give it a more permanent dealership-like shine and wet look, then this polishing service may be what you're looking for!

NOTE:  While paint enhancement services dramatically reduce paint imperfections and offer a near-perfect finish, customers should not expect 100% defect-free results. Also, very old cars or cars that have not been properly maintained and have significantly worn paint may not have enough clearcoat to allow for effective polishing. Many times these cars can still greatly benefit from the application of a quality wax, sealant, or coating.
